About the Show
Nathan Morgan rules as top feline Old Deuteronomy in the national tour of Cats. As the leader in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical, Morgan feels great responsibility and pride. Morgan talked to Broadway.com about the show, which will prowl into Edmonton from February 22 through February 26.
“Old Deuteronomy is the leader and is respected by everyone. In developing my character, I found a deep love for each of the other cats,” Morgan said. “The energy I get from my cast and the ability to return that love and respect is the best part of doing [the show] every day.”
Morgan noted that he sees a lot of himself in Old Deuteronomy. “He may not always agree with the choices his tribe makes, but he is willing to watch them learn, and comfort them when their choices turn out to be less fulfilling than was originally intended,” Morgan said. “Now if I just had Old Deuteronomy’s patience!”
Based on T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, the musical tells the story of the Jellicle cats and each cat's individual quest to be selected as the lucky one that will ascend to "the heavyside layer." In their desire to be chosen to rise above to cat heaven, each cat sings his or her story. The hit show ran for 21 years in London and 18 years on Broadway, where it won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
